Two books about Cockburnspath Date Posted:11/11/2003
Hi there, You are fortunate in that there are
two excellent local history texts to read. The most comprehensive is called
"Cockburnspath: A History Of A People And A Place"
and is an attractively-illustrated paperback about our community.
The first chapters cover the history of Cockburnspath
and its neighbouring communities, including Cove, Old Cambus,
Oldhamstocks, Penmanshiel and so forth.
The next section includes archaeological sites,
agriculture and artists and there is much information on the culture of
the area.
It is an excellent read. It is no longer in print
(I know, as we tried to add it to our book website, but couldn't),
as there was
just one run of 3,500 I think, but I know of
someone who bought multiple copies, so they may be willing to part with
one, or
alternatively, you could contact the Author via
Dunglass Mill Press, Dunglass Mill, Cockburnspath TD13 5XE. The book's
ISBN is 0-9535409-1-X - there could be second
hand copies on Amazon? The other book is by the former minister
Eric Rankin - Cockburnspath: History of a Berwickshire
Parsih, (or similar). I will see if I can find out more on that one for
you (i.e. ISBN and title).
We also hope to be adding details of monumental
inscriptions onto the site, so you can look for ancestors' gravestones.
Will keep
you posted on that too - especially if I spot
any Galbraiths.

I am grateful for your reply in regards to literature
about the area. I would be interested in purchasing a copy of the books
you
mentioned if any are available.
