Pease Bridge to close for 6 months.

PEASE Bridge on the A1107 between the A1 turn-off at Cockburnspath and Coldingham needs to be closed for about 24 weeks extensive work to be undertaken by the DLO and sub-contractors J&W Elliot from Duns. Traffic is to be diverted via Eyemouth and Coldingham, but the ford at pease bay could unusually busy, so please take care if on foot or i your car, as the road is treacherous there. The Bridge, which was for a number of years the highest in Europe was originally constructed in 1785and after nearly 220 years of use, and latterly punishment from large articulated vehicles, the deteriorating stonework and areas of decayed lime mortar on the bridge are reported to be in need of replacement. Parapets will be dismantled and rebuilt, spandrel and wing walls will be re-pointed and several weathered stones will also be replaced completely. The refurbishment is expected to be completed by 1 December 2004.
